Around 50 cars have been smeared with what appears to be blood from a person in the German municipality of Hanau close to Frankfurt, police confirm law enforcement.
Automobiles, building surfaces and postboxes were marked, occasionally with Nazi symbols, they stated in a official communication.
Officers say they were alerted late on Wednesday, when a resident noticed that a vehicle in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been covered with a reddish liquid.
The fluid had been drawn in the form of a banned symbol, they stated.
Law enforcement then located many other smeared vehicles and building exteriors in the adjacent neighborhood.
Nazi symbols are prohibited in Germany under laws outlawing the public exhibition of Nazi symbols.
Law enforcement state initial examinations indicate the substance was most likely human blood.
"Currently there is no indication as to its origin; investigators are presently not cognizant of any physical harm in association with the incident," they added.
Local authorities stated they were attempting "to unravel the incident" and have appealed to the public for information.
An important political figure said the incident made him stunned and required to be resolved promptly.
"This event strikes at the center of Hanau and revives the trauma of the extremist violent incident in 2020," he wrote on online, referring to the murder of nine individuals by a gunman targeting people of foreign heritage in 2020.
