The buzz around this year's gaming ceremony was significant, notably after presenter Geoff Keighley shared an enigmatic photo of a strange statue. The question has been revealed. Larian Studios is working on a brand-new Divinity game.
Announced as Divinity, the game was debuted with a daring trailer that included intense imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to an orgy and the literal descent into chaos.
A Different Direction
For those expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, prepare for a surprise. Larian clarified that a third Original Sin game to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not being worked on now.
Nevertheless, the developer described this new Divinity as a continuation of the core franchise. This choice of words suggests that the team could be building a faster-paced experience as opposed to another tactical title. Currently, it remains theory, as only a cinematic trailer is available.
A Pillar of Modern RPGs
The Divinity series is highly rated and many say it sparked the recent resurgence of deep computer role-playing games. These games are known for rich lore, player agency, and deep class systems—qualities that later reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its world is traditional swords and sorcery, what makes Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust given to the player.
Where many modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is packed with specialized paths that are viable with a particular class or origin with a personal story.
The series is also wonderfully flexible, enabling players to improvise throughout the entire experience. Virtually all objectives can be solved in a variety of manners, sometimes in unexpected fashion.
- You might progress the story because you remembered something a non-human character said.
- Or, you could overcome an obstacle by using the world itself in a unorthodox way.
The Journey Continues
It is precisely these elements that have cemented the series to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as a top-tier role-playing games in history. Now, players can look forward to another adventure in this legendary franchise.
