EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson States

The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the US on five European individuals working on combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official stated.

European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans targeted figures who have been at the heart of efforts to enact legislation governing US-based technology firms.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the move.

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

The DSA is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, while European leaders argue the regulations are essential to combat hate speech and disinformation.

This row threatens to become a facet of a much broader existing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and European institutions.

Other Developments Reported Today

In other judicial news:

  • A federal judge has halted attempts to cut security grants to states that do not comply with specific federal immigration rules. The judge stated the action was “another example” of tying federal aid to policy compliance.
  • Authorization was issued for the deployment of hundreds of national guard troops to a major US city ahead of the holiday period, coinciding with an active border security initiative.
  • A Pacific Island nation has agreed to accept a limited number of migrants from the US in exchange for increased assistance, after signing a memorandum of understanding with Washington.

Furthermore, a Democratic lawmaker has filed a lawsuit to demand the stripping of a political figure’s name from a well-known cultural institution in the capital.

Analysts have also noted that recent statements regarding Venezuelan oil reflect a wider ideology in some quarters of “economic expansionism”, drawing comparisons with historical international strategies.
