Boston Mayor Michelle Wu Responds to President Trump's Warning to Move FIFA World Cup Games from City

Boston's mayor, Michelle Wu, indicated that the city was ready for a face-off with President Donald Trump concerning his claim that he could instruct FIFA to relocate World Cup tournament games from Gillette Stadium, situated approximately 35 kilometers south-west of the city.

Mayor Wu spoke on a Boston-based podcast this week to answer criticism from the White House, which had labeled her as "radical left." Trump had threatened that he would call the head of FIFA if Boston did not "address its issues."

A great deal of it is secured by contract so that no single person, even the president, can undo it.

Wu added, "We live in a time where for drama, for control, to test limits ... ongoing threats ... are issued at people and cities who stand their ground and comply or be obedient to a divisive plan."

She further stated, "We will keep being who we are, and that means, unfortunately, we are going to be in a conversation that is targeting what Boston stands for." She finished by stressing her support for the Boston, saying, "Fully committed for our city."

Trump's Comments and FIFA's Involvement

Recently, Infantino was seen with President Trump at the international summit in Egypt. Infantino has also visited the Oval Office and presented World Cup tournament and club championship awards to Trump as presents.

On Tuesday, Trump was questioned on recent disturbances in a Boston neighborhood that included a police car being set on fire. He responded, "If things aren't handled well, and if I feel there's unsafe conditions, I would call Infantino – the president of FIFA, who's phenomenal."

He added, "I'd tell him: 'We should relocate the games' and they would do that. He wouldn't love to do it. But he would do it without hesitation." Trump also directly criticized Mayor Wu, stating, "Their mayor is ineffective ... she's far-left, and they're taking over some areas in Boston. That's a pretty big statement, right?"

Previous Warnings and Upcoming Tournament Details

President Trump has previously suggested that he would take the similar discussion with the FIFA president about relocating matches from other host cities, which are part of the 16 locations across North America.

The US is co-hosting the 2026 World Cup with Mexico and Canada. The expanded tournament is scheduled to be held from 11 June to July 19 next summer.
